Perlite is a non-toxic, naturally occurring volcanic substance that is microporous and has a high surface area.
Perlite is used in soil to add aeration, drainage and insulation which is essential for healthy roots in plants.
As Perlite is so lightweight, it is ideal to use in vertical gardens, hanging baskets, window containers, and indoor hanging plants.
Perlite can balance soil temperatures and will insulate roots against extreme temperature changes.
Perlite does not breakdown easily in the soil, making it a long-lasting additive.
Perlite holds water efficiently but does not become waterlogged with overwatering or prolonged weather conditions. This makes it an ideal additive to indoor plant potting mixes.
Perlite is very good at rooting plant cuttings = soaked firstly in water and used on its own.
Mixing perlite into seedling trays will add to the effectiveness of germination.
A 50/50 mix of vermiculite and perlite is a very popular medium for drip type hydroponic systems as well as ebb and flow systems.
